Preservation Education Recreation

The McHenry County Conservation District owns and manages over 21,500 acres of open space graced with woodlands, prairies, wetlands, and savannas.

In 27 conservation areas, trails and other recreational amenities have been added where the public can enjoy hiking, biking, fishing, canoeing, camping, cross-country skiing, picnicking as well as the opportunity to visit four educational facilities. Discover your District today!

Learn about volunteer opportunities available at the Trail of History! Attendance at one orientation meeting is required for all first-time volunteers. Positions include Military Tactics, Cornhusk Doll Making, Historical Kitchen, non-costumed positions and more!
